Docent Program
Docent Program (ages 18 and up)
Brandywine Zoo Docents complete specialized training through the Zoo's Docent training program. Before entering docent training they must have completed 25 volunteer hours to qualify. The training includes zoo orientations, behind the scenes information, animal facts, exhibit interpretation, program information, and training in animal handling and teaching methods. The docents are involved in education activities, tours, live animal presentations, on-site live animal exhibit interpretation, Traveling Zoo programs, informal public presentations, and special events.

What is your job at the Brandywine Zoo?
I give educational tours to classes that come to the Brandywine Zoo. I also go to elementary schools and teach children about animals with the traveling zoo.
How long have you been working here?
I have been working here for 12 years.
How did you get your job?
I saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers needed at the Brandywine Zoo, so I came here. I went through some training and then started working
What do you like best about your job?
I like the animals, and I like to talk to people about the animals.
What is the hardest thing you've had to do on your job?
The hardest thing I've had to do on my job is catching the chinchilla one time after it escaped.
What is your favorite animal?
My favorite animal is the otter.
