Brandywine Zoo Volunteer Program

Title: American Kestrel Program Volunteer

Reports to/Department: Under the supervision of the Education Curator, reports to lead Education team members as assigned.

Position Description: Volunteers in this position will be assisting the Brandywine Zoo's American kestrel conservation project in Delaware. Volunteers may help install or monitor kestrel nest boxes across the state. Additionally, they may act as ambassadors for the program, helping to identify partner sites for new boxes, visiting schools to talk about the program, teach lessons, or assist students with data analysis.

As a member of the club, your photos could be seen in Brandywine Zoo's marketing materials, advertising, website, ZooNews articles, eNews, social media pages and more. In addition, Camera Club Volunteers serve a vital role in documenting Zoo activities like special visits and events.

Volunteer Responsibilities:
  • Work with and assist the Zoo Kestrel Program coordinator to install boxes at new sites.
  • Monitor a box/boxes weekly/bi-weekly during nesting season (Late Feb-August). This includes checking for kestrel activity and removing nesting material from invasive species.
  • Recording data, including site data, kestrel observations, number of eggs laid, chicks hatched and chicks fledged.
  • Install and monitor nest box cameras on successful boxes.
  • Work with and assist Zoo Educators to teach students about the kestrel program and kestrel conservation in Delaware.
  • Assist in construction of nest boxes.

  • Those who enjoy building or woodworking.
Volunteer Requirements:
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be fluent in the English language (verbal and written communication).
  • Able to professionally represent the Brandywine Zoo in all interactions with visitors, staff, and other members of the community that may visit the zoo.
  • Able and willing to read and follow verbal and written work instructions and work independently.
  • Able and willing to follow standards based and grade specific lesson plans.
  • Able and willing to speak in front of mixed age audiences.
Training: Volunteer must complete New Volunteer Orientation with the Education Department as well as complete a Kestrel program orientation.

Required Time Commitment:Minimum weekly or bi-weekly commitment to checking assigned nest box/boxes during nesting season, late February through August.

Shift Times: No shift times, box checks can be scheduled at the volunteer's convenience.
